Gilliam moved to Los Angeles in the 1980s to pursue costume design for television, working her way up to costume supervisor. She married Murray Gilliam, a former personal trainer and U.S. Marine Corps veteran, in 1997, and the couple raised two children, Robert and Susan, in Los Angeles.
