Phyllis Gilliam was an American costume supervisor and wardrobe professional, a native of Mobile, Alabama, who attended St. James Major Catholic School and McGill-Toolen High School before earning a bachelor's degree from Xavier University — where she fell in love with theater and costume design — and later a master's degree from the University of Houston.
Gilliam moved to Los Angeles in the 1980s to pursue costume design for television, working her way up to costume supervisor. Over her career she worked on a wide range of series and films, with credits including Just Shoot Me!, Numb3rs, Mob City, Marvel's Agent Carter, Great News, Miracle Workers, The Upshaws, Home Economics, Ghosts, and the film Role Models. Most recently, she served as costume supervisor on the CBS Young Sheldon spinoff Georgie & Mandy's First Marriage, working on Season 1 and part of Season 2.
She married Murray Gilliam, a former personal trainer and U.S. Marine Corps veteran, in 1997, and the couple raised two children, Robert and Susan, in Los Angeles. In a painful sequence of events, both Phyllis and Murray were diagnosed with stage 4 cancer; Murray died in January 2026, and Phyllis died two months later, on March 23, 2026.
